If you’re Ed Stephanski, and you flat out know that ‘Dre isn’t coming back, is there any reason you wouldn’t extend a one-year offer to Iverson? (Assuming AI would want such a thing, of course.)
All he wants is the veteran’s minimum and to be a starter. FOR ONE YEAR. Which would give us the flexibility to join the Dwayne Wade sweepstakes next summer (provided Sammy is moved for an expiring contract and they don’t use up the ‘Dre money).
Can you imagine seeing AI back in an Erz uni? How badly would you want to be there when #3 walks out of the tunnel and returns to his home floor for the first time? I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
We ain’t winning anything any time soon anyway. So again, I ask: WHY NOT?

Simmons seems to agree with you:
"Since when was it a good idea to bet against Iverson? Name another NBA player who overcame more obstacles over the years."
I also read somewhere that the Erz are still in the red even with 'Dre walking. Seems impossible, but maybe with the cap lowering we're still not under the figure. Either way, the approach seems to be "we ain't winning anything any time soon amyway", so why spend a nickel more? Short term minimum salary contracts seems to be all they're considering. I could be wrong.
By the way, you were right in hindsight that we should have traded Miller at the deadline last year. I wouldn't have been upset if the Erz signed him to the deal that Portland got, but if the plan was to lowball him with a 1 year deal this summer, why not just trade him? WTF?!?)
Back to AI: I'm not getting goosebumps at the idea of AI in a retro Sixers uni to start the season. It would create a buzz for a minute, but ultimately he has no place on this team this year. Young guys need to prove they can play. It's not a place for an aging star trying to climb back on top the mountain.
I love AI. I hope he does well. I hope he regains some of his lost status and makes some doubters pay. But he can't do it here. Here, is the one place that would mark his decline more than celebrate any new glory. He was at his best here. Like Namath, with the Colts, he needs to go out elsewhere.
